From the Living Attributes Codex
One of the deepest truths I’ve come to understand and have learned to live by is this: “I don’t see the world as it is. I see the world as I am.”
Over the years, I’ve noticed how two people can walk through the same experience and come away with completely different interpretations. One feels uplifted, the other feels rejected. One sees an opening, the other sees a problem.
I’ve asked myself many times… why is that?
What I now understand is that I’m not just seeing what’s happening in front of me. I’m seeing it through my beliefs, my experiences, and the attributes I am or am not embodying in that moment.
And if I’m feeling unworthy within myself, I can start to see rejection where there may be none.
If I’m not trusting, I can quickly assume the worst before truth has even revealed itself. If I’m in fear, I can often see obstacles before I can see possibilities. Nothing “out there” has necessarily changed. But my experience of it has completely changed.
Through the lens of the Living Attributes Codex, I can see that my perception is not neutral; it’s an expression of my current state of being.
Life, in many ways, meets us as a mirror. It reflects what we believe, what we fear, and, most importantly, what is ready to be healed within us.
This isn’t always easy to accept, because it asks us to take responsibility, not in a heavy or blaming way, but in an empowering one. It reminds us that we are not just reacting to life… we are participating in how we experience it.
And that’s where self-awareness becomes everything. When we pause and gently ask ourselves, “What within me is shaping the way I’m seeing this?” something shifts.
In that space, I begin to see that I have a choice. I can choose to strengthen the attributes that expand my perception rather than limit it.
We can return to our Integrity and meet life honestly rather than defensively, and embody Compassion, we interpret others with openness instead of judgement. We anchor in our Faith so that possibility can exist even when we can’t yet see the outcome. We can cultivate Gratitude and stay connected to what is present rather than what feels absent.
And as we do this, gently and consistently, we notice something beautiful begin to happen. The world we experience starts to change.
Not because everything outside of us has shifted, but because the way we meet it has.
We begin to see more clearly and begin to feel more grounded. We begin to recognise opportunities, connections, and insights that we may have once overlooked.
This is the “living practice” I prefer to encounter, and I decided I’m not here to control every external circumstance.
I believe we are here to refine the lens through which we see and respond to life. And as we do, life begins to feel less like something happening to us… and more like something we are consciously in relationship with.
So, when I find myself caught in a reaction loop or a judgmental interpretation, I gently remind myself: I’m not just seeing the world. I’m seeing a reflection of where I am within myself.
And that means I have the power to shift what I see by tending to who I am being. How about you?
Heart to Heart, Elizabeth
