Living in the Light: The Thirteen Contritions of The Sophia

A Sacred Spiral of Remembrance, Restoration and the Embodiment of Wisdom

The Living Attributes Codex explores how we bring the qualities of Light into our everyday lives through conscious awareness, reflection, and action. At its heart are twelve pairs of Living Attributes, each offering a different perspective on how we can develop our insight, cultivate our potential, and participate more consciously in the world.

Exploring the Thirteen Repentances of Sophia through this framework offers an opportunity to consider the relationship between spiritual aspiration, discernment, and the restoration of wisdom. Sophia’s journey, as presented in the ancient Pistis Sophia, describes her descent into Chaos, her repeated appeals to the Light, and the intervention through which she is progressively restored. Read while in contemplation, her story prompts us to examine what happens when we lose our orientation, how we recognise the influences that lead us away from our greater understanding, and how we recover our relationship with the Light.

This exploration isn’t meant to suggest that the Pistis Sophia contains the specific teachings of the Living Attributes Codex. Rather, it brings the ancient narrative into dialogue with your contemporary spiritual framework, exploring the resonances between Sophia’s journey and the principles of Living in the Light.

The Pillar of Light, the Gold Circle, the Sacred Mirroring Spiral, the Angels of the Heart, the Angel Rays and the Christos Sophia offer complementary ways to contemplate this journey. Together, they offer a framework for exploring how spiritual insight can be integrated into our thoughts, feelings, relationships, creativity, and actions.

The twelve pairs of Living Attributes

The Living Attributes Codex centres on the following twelve pairs, which form the foundation of its explanation of Living in the Light.

  1. RED Strength and Benevolence overcoming the impulse of Weakness and Destruction
  2. ORANGE Courage and Altruism overcoming the impulse of Cowardice and Egoism
  3. YELLOW Integrity and Resurrection overcoming the impulse of Dishonesty and Victimised
  4. GREEN Faith and Autonomy overcoming the impulse of Disbelief and Codependency
  5. BLUE Compassion and Truth overcoming the impulse of Detachment and Falsehood
  6. INDIGO Beauty and Prophecy overcoming the impulse of Ugliness and Misunderstanding
  7. VIOLET Forgiveness and Veneration overcoming the impulse of Blame and Disdain
  8. PINK Loving and Blissful overcoming the impulse of Resentment and Unworthiness
  9. MAGENTA Intuition and Plentiful overcoming the impulse of Disconnected and Inadequate
  10. SILVER Kindness and Sacred Knowledge overcoming the impulse of Cruelty and Ignorance
  11. CYAN Gratitude and Unity overcoming the impulse of Unappreciative and Disarray
  12. GOLD Divinity and Extraordinary Immanence overcoming the impulse of Earthbound and the Ordinary

Each pairing brings complementary qualities into relationship. Rather than treating the attributes as isolated virtues, we can explore how they inform and balance one another. Strength, for example, finds a constructive expression through Benevolence, while Compassion is supported by Truth and Faith is strengthened by Autonomy.

The twelve pairs form the Gold Circle, a symbolic depiction of the qualities through which we can explore and embody the Light. They are not twelve steps that must be completed in a fixed order, but interconnected qualities that can be revisited as our awareness evolves.

Within this system, the thirteen repentances offer a narrative through which we can contemplate the relationship between these qualities and the restoration of spiritual discernment.

Sophia’s descent and the loss of orientation

A profound message in the Pistis Sophia: when Sophia is drawn toward a light she believes is The Light. She is deceived by a lion-faced power known as Self-willed, or Authades, and descends into Chaos, where hostile powers seek to deprive her of her true light and power.

Her predicament can be read as a story about the vulnerability that arises when aspiration is not accompanied by discernment. The desire for illumination is not itself the problem; rather, Sophia’s longing leads her towards something that resembles the Light but does not represent the source she seeks.

We can recognise a similar pattern in ordinary life when we pursue an ideal, relationship, opportunity, or belief that initially promises fulfilment but gradually draws us away from our values. We may discover that we have surrendered our judgement, overlooked important information, or mistaken an experience’s intensity for evidence of its truth.

The Living Attributes Codex offer a way to examine these experiences without reducing them to personal failure. Faith and Autonomy invite us to maintain our spiritual orientation while exercising independent discernment. Integrity and Resurrection encourage us to acknowledge what has happened and recover capacities that may have been obscured. Compassion and Truth allow us to recognise our mistakes without denying their consequences or diminishing our worth.

The Sacred Mirroring Spiral offers a way to revisit these experiences with greater awareness. Rather than treating the journey as a straight line from darkness to light, we can understand it as a process of reflection in which familiar patterns may reveal new meanings as our insight develops.

This aspect of Sophia’s story therefore invites us to recognise where we have lost our bearings and consider what will help us restore a more conscious relationship with The Light.

The thirteen contritions through the Living Attributes

The introduction to Contrition invites us into a state of devotional surrender, in which we soften our attachment to pride, control, and the assumptions that have led us away from our deeper spiritual understanding. It is not an act of self-punishment or a declaration of unworthiness, but an offering of humility, honesty, and genuine longing for reconnection.

Through this sincere surrender, we become receptive to The Light, allowing its wisdom to guide our understanding and restore our relationship with the sacred. Sophia’s journey reminds us that it is not through force of will alone that we find our way home, but through the devotion of an open heart, the willingness to acknowledge what we can’t see clearly, and the trust to surrender ourselves to a wisdom greater than our own.

The following interpretation brings each contrition into dialogue with one of the twelve attribute pairs, with the thirteenth representing their integration. These pairings are proposed correspondences for your Codex, not associations explicitly established by the ancient text.

A graphic featuring the word 'STRENGTH' in bold letters, surrounded by a golden circular design against a red background with sparkles.

The First Contrition: Strength and Benevolence overcoming the impulse of Weakness and Destruction

Sophia’s first appeal expresses distress and a longing for deliverance. Through Strength and Benevolence, we can contemplate the fortitude required to acknowledge our circumstances and the care needed to respond constructively.

Strength lets us face what has happened without letting adversity define us. Benevolence directs that strength toward restoration rather than punishment, domination, or control.

The Pillar of Light represents a point of orientation we can return to when circumstances become confusing. By bringing our attention to the heart and the values we wish to embody, we begin to recognise the difference between reacting to difficulty and responding with considered intention.

A vibrant orange circle with a sparkling gold border, featuring the word 'COURAGE' in bold black letters and the phrase 'LIVING ATTRIBUTES' below it.

The Second Contrition: Courage and Altruism overcoming the impulse of Cowardice and Egoism

Sophia continues to seek help as her predicament deepens. Courage and Altruism invite us to recognise that asking for help need not diminish our agency.

Courage enables us to acknowledge our limitations, while Altruism reminds us that restoring our own clarity can shape how we contribute to others’ lives.

The Gold Circle reminds us that our qualities are most constructive when they work together. Courage without consideration can become recklessness, while altruism without discernment can lead us to neglect necessary boundaries.

A vibrant yellow circle with a golden rim, featuring the word 'INTEGRITY' in bold, stylized black letters and the phrase 'LIVING ATTRIBUTES' beneath it.

The Third Contrition: Integrity and Resurrection overcoming the impulse of Dishonesty and Victimised

As Sophia continues her appeals, her predicament calls for reflection on the difference between what appears to be true and what is true.

Integrity asks us to examine our assumptions and recognise where we may have been misled. Resurrection represents the possibility of recovering understanding, purpose, or inner resources that have been obscured by experience.

Through the Sacred Mirroring Spiral, we can return to a familiar situation with a different perspective, recognising patterns that we may not have understood previously.

The Fourth Contrition: Faith and Autonomy overcoming the impulse of Disbelief and Codependency

Sophia’s appeals continue to express her longing for the Light and her need for deliverance.

Faith and Autonomy offer a way to contemplate the relationship between spiritual trust and personal discernment. Faith can sustain our connection with what we regard as sacred, while Autonomy reminds us to remain responsible for our own choices.

Living in the Light does not require us to surrender our judgement to an external authority. It invites us to develop a relationship with the sacred that supports thoughtful, responsible participation in life.

A circular emblem with a deep blue background, featuring the word 'COMPASSION' in bold black letters and the phrase 'LIVING ATTRIBUTES' below it, surrounded by a golden glow and sparkles.

The Fifth Contrition: Compassion and Truth overcoming the impulse of Detachment and Falsehood

Sophia’s suffering continues, and the narrative does not suggest that recognising her predicament immediately resolves it.

Compassion and Truth invite us to acknowledge painful circumstances without denying their reality. Compassion makes room for understanding, while Truth helps us recognise what requires attention or change.

Here, the Angels of the Heart can be contemplated as symbols of the qualities that help us stay present with difficulty without abandoning ourselves or others.

The Sixth Contrition: Beauty and Prophecy overcoming the impulse of Ugliness and Misunderstanding

Sophia’s appeals express a craving for relief, even as her circumstances remain uncertain.

Beauty and Prophecy invite us to consider how we perceive possibility during periods of difficulty. Beauty can help us recognise meaning, relationship, and coherence, while Prophecy represents an openness to possibilities that are not yet visible.

This pairing does not require us to assume that every painful experience has a predetermined purpose. Instead, it invites us to remain receptive to what may emerge while recognising what is happening in the present.

A circular purple design featuring the word 'FORGIVENESS' in bold black letters, surrounded by a golden halo and sparkling effects.

The Seventh Contrition: Forgiveness and Veneration overcoming the impulse of Blame and Disdain

Sophia continues to seek deliverance, and her story invites questions about the relationship between suffering, mercy, and restoration.

Forgiveness invites us to consider what we can release without denying harm or abandoning accountability. Veneration brings reverence for the sacred into the process, reminding us that restoration involves more than simply returning to our previous state of understanding.

The Sacred Mirroring Spiral lets us revisit experiences without staying confined to the responses we once made. We can learn from what has happened and choose a different way forward.

The Eighth Contrition: Loving and Blissful overcoming the impulse of Resentment and Unworthiness

Despite her continued appeals, Sophia experiences renewed difficulty.

Loving and Blissfulness invite us to examine the relationship between longing, love, and inner peace. Loving asks whether our wish for connection supports mutual respect and integrity, while Blissfulness represents the possibility of peace that arises through greater alignment.

This pairing likewise invites us to distinguish between authentic love and the pursuit of something that merely promises fulfilment.

The Gold Circle reminds us that Loving is strengthened by the other attributes, particularly Integrity, Compassion, and Truth.

A vibrant purple circle with a gold outline and sparkles, featuring the word 'INTUITION' prominently displayed in bold black letters, along with the phrase 'LIVING ATTRIBUTES' below it.

The Ninth Contrition: Intuition and Plentiful overcoming the impulse of feeling Disconnected and Inadequate

As Sophia advances on her journey, we can contemplate how understanding develops through repeated encounters with uncertainty.

Intuition invites us to listen for what may not seem immediately obvious, while Plentiful encourages an orientation toward prospect rather than assuming a setback has closed every avenue.

Within the Sacred Mirroring Spiral, an experience that once looked like a repetition of failure may reveal an opportunity to respond differently.

The Four Trinities offer complementary perspectives here, allowing us to consider a challenge through the lenses of agency, learning, nurturing, and wisdom.

A circular design featuring the word 'KINDNESS' in bold black text, surrounded by a golden, sparkling glow, with the phrase 'LIVING ATTRIBUTES' below.

The Tenth Contrition: Kindness and Sacred Knowledge overcoming the impulse of Cruelty and Ignorance

Sophia’s appeals continue to express her desire for divine assistance amid adversity.

Kindness invites us to respond to difficulty without replicating the hostility we may have encountered. Sacred Knowledge represents understanding that has been integrated into our choices and actions rather than remaining abstract information.

The Angels of the Heart and Angel Rays can support this meditation by offering symbolic focal points for qualities such as truth, protection, compassion, and discernment.

In your framework, Michael’s association with Truth and Protection is particularly relevant to the theme of recognising deception and establishing suitable boundaries.

A circular graphic featuring the word 'GRATITUDE' in bold black letters, surrounded by a sparkling golden ring against a soft blue background, with the phrase 'LIVING ATTRIBUTES' below.

The Eleventh Contrition: Gratitude and Unity overcoming the impulse of Unappreciative and Disarray

Sophia’s continuing appeals invite us to consider what supports restoration when our circumstances feel divided or uncertain.

Gratitude helps us recognise the resources, relationships, and insights which remain available to us. Unity invites us to restore coherence within ourselves and build more constructive relationships with others.

Unity does not require us to disregard differences or tolerate harmful behaviour. It involves recognising our interdependence while retaining our capacity for discernment and responsible action.

The Pillar of Light symbolises the relationship between inner understanding and outward expression, reminding us that our spiritual values find meaning in how we live.

A circular logo with a gold background featuring the word 'DIVINITY' in bold black letters and 'LIVING ATTRIBUTES' in smaller text below it, surrounded by a shimmering effect.

The Twelfth Contrition: Divinity and Extraordinary Immanence overcoming the impulse of feeling Earthbound and Ordinary

As Sophia approaches the culmination of her appeals, we can contemplate the relationship between spiritual understanding and its expression in the world.

Divinity represents the sacred dimension of existence within your own framework. Extraordinary Immanence highlights the sacred presence in an embodied life, relationships, creativity, and the ordinary circumstances through which we participate in the world.

This pairing invites us to consider that spiritual understanding need not be expressed through claims of exceptional status or separation from humanity. We can recognise its importance in the way we live, create, care, and contribute.

The Gold Circle reminds us that our relationship with the sacred is expressed through integrating the attributes rather than elevating one quality above the others.

The Thirteenth Contrition: The Integration of the Gold Circle

Sophia’s thirteenth contrition is a decisive moment in the narrative. She reflects on her descent and appeals for forgiveness and purification. Her deliverance, however, unfolds through subsequent intervention rather than through repentance alone.

In the Living Attributes Codex, the thirteenth Contrition can symbolise integrating the twelve attribute pairs.

The twelve pairs remain the foundation of Living in the Light; the thirteenth Contrition requires no additional attribute. Instead, it offers a point from which to contemplate the relationship between the whole circle and the spiritual orientation that guides its expression. “Use your Light, and use it well”.

The question is no longer which attribute is required in a particular situation, but how the qualities work together to support wisdom, responsibility, and a more integrated way of living.

The Pillar of Light and the Gold Circle

The Pillar of Light and the Gold Circle are complementary elements of your spiritual framework.

The Pillar of Light represents the vertical relationship between embodied life and spiritual orientation. The Gold Circle and its twelve Light Centres represent the interconnected qualities through which that relationship is expressed.

Within meditation, the Pillar begins with awareness of the body and heart. It offers a symbolic point of connection that helps us reflect on our values and how we wish to participate in life.

The Gold Circle offers twelve pairs of attributes through which we can examine our choices and responses. Each pairing offers a particular perspective, while the circle as a whole reminds us that no single quality can answer everything.

The Sacred Mirroring Spiral describes how we revisit experience, reflect upon what it reveals, and integrate new understanding into our lives. The Pillar provides orientation, the Gold Circle provides the attributes, and the Spiral provides the movement of reflection and integration.

Together, they present a practical way to explore Living in the Light.

The Angels of the Heart and the Angel Rays

The Angels of the Heart and Angel Rays bring a devotional dimension to Living in the Light.

Within your framework, they can be contemplated as representations of qualities that support discernment, protection, compassion, and wisdom. In this interpretation, they are not meant to replace personal judgement, but to provide a symbolic language through which we can focus our attention and deepen our reflection.

Michael, associated in your system with Truth and Protection, offers a particularly relevant point of contemplation in relation to Sophia’s initial deception. His ray can symbolise the courage to recognise what is misleading, the clarity to distinguish what is trustworthy, and the responsibility to establish suitable boundaries.

The other Angel Rays can be incorporated according to the correspondences you have established for them. This holds the angelic framework consistent with your Codex rather than assigning historical meanings the original text does not provide.

The arrival of the Christos Sophia

The arrival of the Christos Sophia is central to the contemporary interpretation of Sophia’s journey.

The Pistis Sophia describes Jesus as the principal agent of Sophia’s assistance and restoration. It does not explicitly describe this as the arrival of the Christos Sophia. In this framework, however, the Christos Sophia is symbolically expressed as the combination of divine illumination and Wisdom.

Christos means the Anointed One, while Sophia means Wisdom. Read together as a contemporary spiritual principle, Christos Sophia can represent the relationship between illumination (the light) and the higher wisdom required to embody it. Light without discernment can be mistaken for something it is not. Wisdom without embodiment can remain an intellectual understanding that has not yet found expression in our lives.

The background features colorful patterns and a golden gradient. The text at the bottom reads 'Christos Sophia Virtues INITIATED AND VIRTUOUS'.

In relation to your Living Attributes Codex, this assimilation of the Christos Sophia is reflected through the twelve united virtues of:

~ INITIATED AND VIRTUOUS ~

~ BRAVE AND STEADFAST ~

~ ILLUMINATED AND WISE ~

~ ABUNDANT AND GRACIOUS ~

~ COMPASSIONATE AND ASSURING ~

~ PURE AND INTEGRAL ~

~ CREATIVE AND GENERATIVE ~

~ HONEST AND JOYOUS ~

~ HARMONIOUS AND BALANCED ~

~ SOVEREIGN AND DEVOTED ~

~ INTUITIVE AND RECEPTIVE ~

~ TRANSCENDENT AND EMBODIED ~

Each pair contributes to a more integrated expression of The Light.

The Christos Sophia therefore represents, within this contemporary interpretation, not a refuge from human experience but the possibility of participating in life with a fuller experience, greater discernment, deeper wisdom, and renewed responsibility.

Living in the Light: bringing the framework into everyday life

The Living Attributes Codex aims to bring spiritual understanding into lived experience.

The twelve attribute pairs provide qualities by which we can examine our thoughts, feelings, choices, relationships, and creative expression. The Pillar of Light offers a symbolic point of orientation, while the Gold Circle holds the attributes in relationship. The Sacred Mirroring Spiral calls on us to reflect upon experience and integrate what we learn.

The Angels of the Heart and Angel Rays provide devotional ways to contemplate particular qualities. The story of Sophia offers a narrative through which we can explore the loss and restoration of discernment. At the same time, the Christos Sophia represents the integration of Light and Wisdom within your contemporary spiritual framework.

These elements are most useful when they help us engage more consciously with the realities of our lives. We can ask where greater courage is needed, where caring must be accompanied by truth, where forgiveness can support healing, or where gratitude can help us recognise the resources available to us.

Living in the Light is therefore not a demand to remain positive or to transcend every difficulty. It is an ongoing practice of recognising what is happening, examining our responses, and choosing how we wish to participate in the world.

Sophia’s story reminds us that the desire for Light calls for discernment, that restoration may require help outside our immediate capacities, and that wisdom develops through how we respond to experience.

The Sacred Mirroring Spiral lets us revisit familiar patterns with greater understanding, while the Gold Circle reminds us that our qualities work best when they work together.

The central principle of Living in the Light is that spiritual understanding finds its fullest expression through the qualities we embody and the way we live.

Through the twelve pairs of attributes and virtues, the Living Attributes Codex offers a framework for exploring that relationship, allowing the search for The Light to evolve into a more conscious expression of wisdom, creativity, compassion, and purposeful participation in life.

IN SUMMARY

The Pistis Sophia presents Sophia’s thirteen Contrition as a spiritual journey from deception and descent into Chaos towards divine restoration and liberation. Having been drawn towards the counterfeit light of Authades, Sophia recognises that she has lost her way and begins calling upon the Light of the Height for deliverance. Her prayers express grief, humility, perseverance, discernment and, ultimately, sincere devotional surrender.

The thirteen Contrition can be understood as a progressive journey through five movements: Realisation, Despair, Discernment, Surrender and Liberation. As Sophia continues to call upon the Light, she moves beyond fear and distress towards a deeper recognition of truth. Her restoration comes not through force of will alone, but through divine assistance and her unwavering devotion to the Light.

Each Contrition is associated with an Old Testament Psalm, whose words illuminate Sophia’s experience and give voice to her longing for protection, guidance, mercy, and restoration. Mary Magdalene plays a significant role in interpreting these prayers, particularly the first Contrition. As one of the most active and insightful disciples in the Pistis Sophia, she represents the importance of spiritual discernment and the wisdom required to recognise the deeper meaning within a sacred teaching.

In my own work, I chose the word Contrition rather than Repentance because it emphasises sincere recognition, humility, and devotional surrender, rather than guilt or self-punishment. Sophia’s journey reminds us to acknowledge where we have mistaken appearances for truth and release the attachments that obscure our connection with the sacred.

This understanding connects meaningfully with my spiritual framework, including the Pillar of Light, the Gold Circle, the Four Trinities, the Sacred Mirroring Spiral, the Angels of the Heart, the Angel Rays, and the arrival of the Christos Sophia. The twelve pairs of Living Attributes offer a contemporary lens for exploring the qualities required to Live in the Light. In contrast, the Sacred Mirroring Spiral offers a way to contemplate, recognise, and integrate these qualities into our lives.

At the heart of this exploration is a simple but profound understanding: sincere, devotional surrender opens us to the Light. Contrition becomes an act of conscious realignment, allowing us to move beyond the ego’s limitations and become receptive to the wisdom, grace, and divine presence that guide our restoration.

This is my contemporary spiritual interpretation of the Pistis Sophia, bringing its ancient teachings into conversation within the Living Attributes Codex. The connections to my own framework are interpretive correlations, and not claims that these specific systems appear in the original text.
