The Sacred Mirroring Spiral and the Living Attributes
For many years, I have been fascinated by the relationship between consciousness, the body, energy and the wider field in which we live. There is something deeply compelling about the possibility that we are not simply isolated individuals moving through life, but participants in a much larger web of relationship, information and experience.
Science gives us increasingly sophisticated ways to observe the electrical, chemical, and electromagnetic activity associated with the human body and brain.
Spiritual traditions have spoken about fields of energy, interconnectedness and consciousness for thousands of years.
These are not necessarily the same conversations, and I think it is important that we do not use science to prove something that science has not established. At the same time, I believe there is value in allowing these different perspectives to sit alongside one another and asking what they might help us understand about our own experience.
This is one of the places where the Living Attributes Codex has developed for me. The Codex is not an attempt to reduce spirituality to science, nor is it a scientific explanation of consciousness. It is a framework for exploring how our inner state influences the way we perceive, interpret and respond to life, and how our experiences can, in turn, reveal qualities within us that are ready for greater awareness and expression.
At the heart of this work is what I call the Sacred Mirroring Spiral.
We are participants in a larger field
Every human being exists within a constant exchange with their environment. We receive information through our senses, interpret what we experience, respond emotionally and physically, and then influence the people and circumstances around us through our behaviour, communication and presence.
Our nervous system is continually responding to what is happening within us and around us. The brain communicates with the rest of the body through complex networks involving the nervous, endocrine and immune systems, while our physical state can influence our perception, attention, mood and capacity to respond.
This creates a dynamic relationship between our inner and outer worlds. An experience affects our state, our state influences our perception, our perception shapes our thoughts and emotions, and those thoughts and emotions influence the choices we make. Those choices then affect our relationships and environment, which provide us with new experiences to respond to.
In that sense, our lives are continually giving us information about ourselves.
The Sacred Mirroring Spiral begins with this simple observation: experience can become a mirror through which we develop greater awareness of ourselves.
The brain, the body and the question of the field
Modern neuroscience has demonstrated that the brain produces measurable electrical activity and associated magnetic fields. Technologies such as magnetoencephalography, or MEG, can detect magnetic fields generated by neural activity without requiring sensors to touch the brain itself.
That is fascinating, but it is important not to take the next step too quickly and conclude that this proves thoughts or memories exist independently of the brain. Current neuroscience understands memory as a dynamic biological process involving distributed neural networks, synaptic changes, protein synthesis and processes of consolidation and reconsolidation.
For me, the more interesting question is not whether quantum physics or neuroscience can prove a spiritual philosophy. They cannot. The more useful question is what happens when we become more attentive to the relationship between our physiology, our consciousness and the environments in which we live.
We know that our bodies respond to stress, safety, connection, threat, nourishment, rest and emotional experience. We also know that prolonged stress can contribute to what is described as allostatic load, where the body’s systems are repeatedly required to adapt to ongoing demands.
This gives us an important bridge between the language of energy and the language of physiology.
When I speak about our “field” within the Living Attributes Codex, I am therefore using the word in a broader sense. It can include the measurable biological and electromagnetic activity of the body, but it also describes the relational and experiential environment we participate in. The way we feel, think, communicate and behave contributes to the atmosphere we create around ourselves, and that atmosphere influences what we experience in return.
The body can become a mirror
There are times when the body tells us something long before the conscious mind is ready to listen.
We might notice that we are exhausted after continually overriding our own needs, tense when we enter situations that do not feel safe, or emotionally depleted when we have given more than we have the capacity to give. We might also experience the opposite: greater energy, openness and clarity when our choices are more closely aligned with what matters to us.
None of this means that every physical symptom has a psychological or spiritual cause. That would be an irresponsible conclusion, particularly when someone is experiencing persistent or serious health concerns. Our bodies are complex biological systems, and appropriate medical care matters.
What I am interested in is the additional layer of listening that can happen when we stop treating the body as something separate from our emotional and inner lives.
Sometimes the body becomes a mirror, showing us patterns that the conscious mind has normalised.
Perhaps we have become accustomed to over-functioning, pleasing others, remaining constantly available or carrying responsibilities that no longer belong to us. Perhaps we have learned to suppress anger, ignore intuition or keep moving because stopping would require us to acknowledge something we would rather avoid.
The mirror does not necessarily tell us what to do. It gives us something to notice. That noticing is where conscious evolution begins.

The Twelve Living Attributes
Within the Living Attributes Codex, the Twelve Living Attributes provide a language for understanding what we may discover when we look into that mirror.
The Attributes are not simply personality characteristics. They represent qualities that can be consciously explored, strengthened and expressed in different circumstances. Each one offers another way of asking, “What quality is this experience inviting me to recognise, develop or embody?”
The Twelve Attributes are:
Strength — the capacity to stand firmly in ourselves and meet life with resilience.
Courage — the willingness to move beyond fear and take meaningful action.
Integrity — the alignment between what we know, what we value, what we say and how we live.
Faith — the ability to trust something greater than immediate certainty and remain open to possibility.
Compassion — the capacity to meet ourselves and others with understanding rather than judgement.
Beauty — the ability to recognise and express the inherent beauty, creativity and meaning within life.
Forgiveness — the willingness to release the continuing hold of blame and resentment while maintaining discernment and appropriate boundaries.
Loving — the capacity to relate through openness, care, affection and genuine connection.
Kindness — the conscious expression of consideration, generosity and gentleness.
Gratitude — the ability to recognise what is meaningful, nourishing and valuable within our experience.
Intuition — the capacity to listen inwardly and recognise information that may not arrive through conventional reasoning alone.
Divinity — the recognition of the sacred dimension of life and of our own capacity to participate consciously in something greater than the individual self.
Together, these twelve qualities form a broader vocabulary for exploring the human experience. They allow us to move beyond asking only, “What is happening to me?” and begin asking, “What is this experience revealing about the qualities I am being invited to develop and express?”
The Sacred Mirroring Spiral
This is where the Sacred Mirroring Spiral becomes central to the Codex.
Our experiences do not simply happen and disappear. They can reveal patterns in how we perceive, react, relate and choose. When we are willing to look at those patterns with honesty, an experience can become a mirror. The mirror gives us awareness, awareness allows us to recognise an Attribute, and that Attribute gives us an opportunity to develop a different way of responding.

The process can be understood as:
Experience → Mirror → Awareness → Attribute → Embodiment → New Experience
The important word here is embodiment. Understanding an Attribute intellectually is different from expressing it through our lives.
We may understand the importance of Integrity, for example, while still finding ourselves saying yes when we mean no. We may value Compassion while continuing to judge ourselves harshly. We may believe in Intuition while repeatedly dismissing what we know inwardly because someone else appears more certain.
The mirror gives us the opportunity to notice these contradictions without turning them into another reason to criticise ourselves.
Instead, we can ask what quality is asking for greater expression.
From reaction to conscious response
One of the most important shifts in this work is the movement from automatic reaction towards conscious response.
Our past experiences shape our nervous systems, beliefs, expectations and patterns of behaviour. When something familiar happens, we may respond from an old template before we have consciously considered whether that response still serves us.
The Sacred Mirroring Spiral gives us a way of creating space between the experience and the reaction. In that space, we can become curious about what is happening within us.
Perhaps an interaction has activated a fear of rejection. Perhaps someone crossing a boundary has revealed that we have been confusing kindness with unlimited access. Perhaps criticism has brought up an old wound around failure. Perhaps success itself has exposed our difficulty with visibility or receiving.
The experience becomes information.
Rather than asking only, “Why does this keep happening to me?” we can begin asking, “What is this showing me about myself, and which Living Attribute could help me respond differently?”
That shift changes the nature of the mirror. We are no longer simply looking for an explanation of the past; we are exploring the possibility of a different future.
Energy, attention and the way we live
I often use the language of energy because it describes something that many of us recognise through direct experience. We can feel when a person is relaxed or tense, open or guarded, present or distracted. We can sense when a room feels welcoming and when it feels uncomfortable, even before anyone has explained why.
There are biological, psychological and relational processes contributing to these experiences, and we do not need to assign everything to an invisible energetic mechanism for the experience to be meaningful.
Our internal state influences our attention. Attention influences what we notice. What we notice influences our interpretation of experience, and our interpretation affects emotion, behaviour and relationship.
This creates a feedback loop:
State → Perception → Thought → Emotion → Behaviour → Relationship and Environment → New State
This is one reason practices such as meditation can be valuable. Meditation does not need to be presented as a way of magically rearranging reality through thought. Its value can be found in the way it helps us develop greater awareness of attention, thought, emotion and physiological state.
When we become more aware of our internal patterns, we have more opportunity to respond consciously rather than automatically.
That, for me, is a much more grounded understanding of conscious creation.
The Living Attributes as a Practice of Evolution
The Twelve Living Attributes are not intended to become another system through which we judge ourselves.
If I discover that I need more Courage, for example, the answer is not to decide that I am somehow deficient because I feel afraid. Courage has meaning precisely because fear exists. If I am exploring Forgiveness, that does not mean I have to reconcile with someone who has harmed me. If I am developing Kindness, it does not mean I have to abandon discernment or healthy boundaries.
Each Attribute has depth, and each can be expressed in healthy or distorted ways.
Strength without Compassion can become hardness. Kindness without Integrity can become people-pleasing. Faith without Discernment can become avoidance. Courage without Wisdom can become recklessness. Forgiveness without boundaries can become permission for continued harm.
This is why the Codex is not simply about collecting positive qualities. It is about developing a more balanced relationship with the qualities within us.
The Sacred Mirroring Spiral gives us the opportunity to recognise where an Attribute is already alive, where it has been underdeveloped, and where its expression may have become distorted through past experience.
Contemplation, Devotion and Activation
The Living Attributes Codex approaches this work through three movements: Contemplation, Devotion and Activation.
Contemplation asks us to notice and understand. We observe the experience, recognise the pattern and become curious about what the mirror is showing us.
Devotion asks us to value the quality we are exploring. We begin to develop a relationship with it rather than treating it as an abstract idea. We might contemplate what Integrity means to us, for example, and recognise the moments in our lives when we have felt most aligned with it.
Activation then brings the Attribute into lived experience. We make a choice, take an action, change a boundary, speak the truth, listen to our intuition or express ourselves creatively.
The movement is therefore from awareness into practice.
This is where the Codex becomes less about spiritual philosophy and more about lived experience. The purpose is not simply to know the Attributes. It is to allow them to influence how we live.
Evolution is a spiral, not a straight line
Our evolution rarely happens in a neat progression. We may revisit the same themes many times, but each return can reveal something different because we are no longer exactly the person we were when we first encountered them.
We might think we have resolved an issue only to find ourselves meeting it again through a different relationship, a different stage of life or a different set of circumstances. That does not necessarily mean we have failed or gone backwards. It may mean that the same theme is ready to be understood at another level.
This is why I use the image of a spiral.
A spiral returns to familiar territory while continuing to move. We may encounter the same Attribute repeatedly, but our relationship with it can deepen as our experience changes.
Perhaps we once needed Strength to survive, and later we need Strength to rest. Perhaps we first discover Courage through speaking up, and later through allowing ourselves to be vulnerable. Perhaps Forgiveness initially means releasing resentment towards another person, while later it involves releasing the judgement we have carried towards ourselves.
The Attribute remains, but our relationship with it evolves.
We are part of the field
For me, the deeper message of the Living Attributes Codex is that we are not separate from the life we are experiencing. We are continually receiving information, interpreting it, responding to it and contributing something of our own to the relationships and environments around us.
That does not mean that we create every circumstance that happens to us. Life contains randomness, complexity, other people’s choices, biology, history and circumstances beyond our control.
What we can explore is our participation.

We can become more conscious of the state we bring into an experience, the stories we tell ourselves about what is happening, the qualities we draw upon in response and the patterns that continue to emerge.
The Sacred Mirroring Spiral gives us a way of working with that process. Experience becomes the mirror, the mirror opens awareness, awareness reveals the Attribute, and the Attribute gives us another possibility for how we might live.
This is where I see the Living Attributes Codex as a practical spiritual technology. It is not about escaping the human experience or trying to control the invisible forces of life. It is about developing a deeper relationship with ourselves so that the qualities already within us can find more conscious expression.
Our lives continually give us opportunities to see ourselves more clearly. Sometimes the mirror is beautiful, and sometimes it shows us something we would rather not see. Either way, there is an invitation within it: to listen, to reflect, to develop greater awareness and to continue evolving.
That, for me, is the living nature of the Codex.
We are not finished beings moving towards some final version of ourselves. We are living participants in an ongoing process of experience, reflection, expression and evolution.
And perhaps the most important question is not simply, “Who am I?”
It is: What quality of who I am is life inviting me to express more fully now?
Heart to Heart, Elizabeth
