Embracing Vulnerability: The Courage to Love

Hello, beautiful Souls,

Today, I’ve got love on my mind, or should I say, heart. – I came across this piece of wisdom by C.S. Lewis today: “To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken.”

So, I thought I’d share a few ideas on LOVE.

The Heart’s Journey: A Blend of Courage and Vulnerability

Imagine your heart as a delicate vessel moulded from emotions, experiences, and connections. Lewis paints a vivid picture, suggesting that genuinely loving exposes this vessel to the world, making it susceptible to joy, sorrow, and everything in between. It’s a daring act, an open invitation to both the beauty and fragility of the human experience.

In your journey through life, you’ve likely encountered moments when love brought immense joy but also times when it felt like your heart might shatter into a million pieces. Lewis encourages you to embrace this vulnerability, acknowledging that the risk of a broken heart is an inherent part of the profound mystery of love.

The Container of Self-serving: A Tempting Refuge

Yet, the temptation to shield your heart from potential pain looms large. Lewis suggests an alternative – the casket or coffin of selfishness. Picture locking away your spirit in a secure box, surrounded by the comforts of solitude and guarded by the fortress of self-preservation. It sounds like a foolproof plan to keep your heart intact.

However, as Lewis wisely points out, your heart undergoes a transformation within that casket, safe but stagnant. It becomes not unbreakable in the sense of immunity to pain, but unbreakable in its refusal to fully experience the depth and richness of love. The heart once meant to beat with passion and connection, becomes confined and restricted.

Courageous Love: The Key to True Connection

As you ponder these reflections, consider this additional nugget of wisdom: to love genuinely, one must be courageous. It’s a bold statement that challenges the notion of love as a passive emotion. According to this perspective, love requires an active and daring spirit and a willingness to face vulnerability head-on.

Imagine the courage it takes to unwrap your heart from the protective layers of destractions, hobbies and luxuries, to let it beat freely in the open, vulnerable to the unpredictable dance of emotions. To love courageously means acknowledging the potential for heartache while embracing the profound joy that love brings.

A Call to Embrace Vulnerability

So, as you continue your journey of love, consider the words of C.S. Lewis as a guide. To love at all is to be vulnerable, but in that vulnerability lies the true beauty of connection and the richness of the human experience. Be courageous, unwrap your heart, and let it beat with the rhythm of love.

Until next time – Heart to Heart and Blessings Abound, Elizabeth
